Date Spot Review: Water Grill Santa Monica
Water Grill in Santa Monica is located at an ideal spot for enjoying an evening by the ocean. While a lot of restaurants at the beach can be overly touristy, Water Grill maintains a good level of culinary integrity, and does not simply rest on its location laurels. It merits a date night.
Water Grill has one of the most lovely places in Los Angeles for a table of two. The booths at their window, (make sure to request one of these seats when you make a reservation) have a beautiful view of the ocean and are a great people watching perch. When you are seated at Water Grill you are greeted with warm out of the oven bread that comes in two varieties: a cheese roll and a sourdough roll. The sourdough is very good and one of my favorite breads in LA.
The food is obviously mostly seafood (if you aren’t a fish fan, I very much enjoy their steaks and their Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger and would recommend both). A good raw bar is always a treat and Water Grill does not disappoint. My favorite raw bar item is the Farmed Peruvian Scallop with pistachio and citrus pesto. For appetizers, I would recommend the Farmed Manila Clams with Chorizo. They have a good heat kick and soaking up the sauce with a baguette is really delicious. The have a a lot of changes in the menu seasonally fish wise, so for a main course I would always see if there is anything new and appealing there. Some menu staples we recommend for a main course are the Farmed Ecuadorian Fish and Grits and the Wild Alaskan Black Cod (Sablefish) with sautéed seasonal mushrooms and red wine anchovie jus. I really love a good bread pudding and their Caramel Bread Pudding with ale red sea salt is a delightful ending to a lovely meal. Their Pot De Creme is also very good, although quite heavy on the chocolate, so if you are looking for something light, I would look elsewhere on the dessert menu.
The food and ambiance at Water Grill pair to make a yummy and lively experience to enjoy with a date. Let us know what you think!
